BEACH TRAVEL THIS YEAR WAS WITH SOME APPREHENSION DUE TO THE OIL IN THE GULF. WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TOEXPECT. WE WERE VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED AT THELACK OF ANY OIL ON THE BEACHES.
THE LOCAL OFFICIALS TOOK MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS AND BUILT A 5 FOOT DAM BETWEEN THE OCEAN AND THE EASTERN LAKE TO PREVENT ANY OIL FROM GETTING TO THE LAKE. THEY DIDNT WAIT ON THE FEDS TO APPROVE THEIR PLANS.
Savannah's riverfront consists of converted old warehouses for retail shops and dining. Sherman did not burn Savannah during the Civil War due to town fathers inviting him to
stay in Savannah when his advance was 10 miles out of town.
